How can contractors find and get found for profitable service niches?

Read time – 3 minutes

Do a test search: Pretend you are looking for a home cleaning service.

Search for ‘house cleaner near me’ and see what shows up.

Now type in ‘Air BNB cleaner’, next try ‘medical office cleaning’.

Chances are you will see the businesses listed in the search change with each of the three searches mentioned.

The power of niches and keywords.

Usually the more general the keyword/niche, the more competition it will have.

Now, pretend you own a cleaning company. Your team can definitely clean houses, but you can also clean those same houses after the event, ‘post-event clean up’ or using ‘pet-friendly house cleaning’ methods.

Just like cleaning a vacation rental, it’s the same service delivered and marketed in a different way.

There are tons of options to position your cleaning company in your service area.

You could focus on ‘move-out cleaning’ or help a specific type of person or business, such as ‘flexible cleaning services for new parents’ or ‘Green Certified Cleaning for LEED Buildings.’

5 Steps To Finding Profitable Niches

  1. Go to ChatGPT and type in: “Make me a list of services and sub-services a {insert the main city you service} {your industry} company can offer. Be as specific as possible. List all possible business niches.”
    • This will usually give you 20-40 niches to start with.
    • See below for an example of the query:
using ChatGpt to find profitable contractor niches

This prompt on ChatGPT led to 16 main niches and over 140 sub-niches for a landscaping company in Dallas, TX.

2. Choose 10-15 niches that jump out to you.

  • Search for the niches on Google, YouTube, Instagram etc.
  • See what comes up on the searches.
  • How many companies have those niches on their websites?
  • Has any company in your area made videos on YouTube about that niche?
  • Any posts on Instagram with the niche as a hashtag?
  • If companies have created stuff with those niches is it any good? Could you do it better?

3. Choose 3-5 niches that you could do well and start creating!

  • Create:
    • blog posts
    • new website pages
    • videos
    • social media posts etc.
    • Make each post centered around your new niches.
  • This will allow you to start showing up online for these types of specific searches.

4. Create and post every week. Start planting seeds. Every tall tree started as a seed. Don’t wait.
